QUOTESBiography Facts Family Quotes Birthdays Timeline Awards Fansmail •At her father's memorial, 20 September 2006: "My daddy was my hero – he was always there for me when I needed him. He listened to me and taught me so many things, but most of all he was fun.
I know that Daddy had an important job. He was working to change the world so everyone would love wildlife like he did. He built a hospital to help animals and he bought lots of land to give animals a safe place to live. He took me and my brother and my mum with him all the time. We filmed together, caught crocodiles together and loved being in the bush together. I don't want Daddy's passion to ever end. I want to help endangered wildlife just like he did. I had the best daddy in the whole world and I will miss him every day. When I see a crocodile I will always think of him and I know that Daddy made this zoo so everyone could come and learn to love all the animals. Daddy made this place his whole life, now it's our turn to help Daddy." •"We are great. Tip-top terrific, actually." (2010) •On Willy: "Well, you know, actually we don't want to wreck any of the movie magic, but unfortunately Willy wasn't actually real because we couldn't get a baby orca to do what he did." (2010) •On filming Free Willy: "It was a lot of fun, though, because everyone was lovely and it was my first movie. So I was very privileged because I got to work with Beau Bridges. He was incredible, he was an absolute inspiration. And he wasn't just there for the filming—he was also an incredible teacher." (2010) •On toy animals: "I have a rat, so I take him everywhere with me. Well, I had a real rat, but he unfortunately he passed away so I actually have a toy now." •On whether she's gotten any animal injuries: "Well, you know I've been very lucky because I've always been really, really safe. I've been around my mom and my dad and they're fantastic. I mean, I'm very lucky because I've gotten to worth with so many animals. We actually live in a zoo in Australia. We have Australia Zoo so we get to live in the middle of the zoo. It's incredible. Every morning you wake up and you don't need an alarm clock because you'll hear the birds and the elephants and the lemurs. It's fantastic, so I'm very lucky." (2010) •On her experience being part of Free Willy: "Well, you know, it was a lot of fun. I had said to my mum before they even asked us, I'd said I'd really love a movie one day. And so when Free Willy came along of course we said yes because we absolutely love all of the other Free Willy films and I mean, it's not just a fun, action-packed movie for all ages, but there's a great message in it as well, so while you watching it you'll accidentally learn something." (2010) •On her favourite animal: "Well I love crocodiles and snakes, but my favourite animal would have to be the echidna. Now, echidnas are an Australian favourite. They're very gorgeous. Here you have the porcupine and they actually shed their quills. But echidnas, they keep them in and what they actually do is they'll curl up in a little ball and if a predator comes along to try and grab them, they'll stick up all these spikes and so they can't eat them because all these spikes are sticking up. And they're very cool because they have an 11cm-long tongue—4 inches—and that's used because they eat thinks like termites and ants. But the really cool thing about them is that they're monotremes. Now, monotremes are actually mammals that lay eggs. And there's only two in the whole world, there's platypus and the echidna, so they're very unique." (2010) •On if she's ever afraid of working with animals: "You know, I'm really not. My dad has taught me so much ever since the day I was hatched, and so has my mum. You know, they both really taught me to love animals and treat them how you would like to be treated. And I'm very privileged because I've gotten to work with so many animals. So when I was doing this movie, it was great to be able to have that knowledge and also to be able to film with some great African wildlife." (2010) •"My favourite thing that my dad taught me. Well, you know, he taught me to treat animals how you would like to be treated, but also what helped me with the movie so much is he taught me to work while the camera is filming you under very hard circumstances. So it's like when we were filming documentaries he was teaching me how you have one take to film this part because you can't exactly say to the elephant, 'Oh we'd like you to charge again.' So it was a lot of fun, but with movie filming it wasn't that difficult, but he still really prepared me." (2010) •"Well, you know, I really want to carry on his footsteps, and that's why filming my first movie was so much fun. I really hope that this movie gets a great conservation message across to all kids. You know, it was fun also playing Kirra Cooper—who I play—because she's trying to save this orca, and actually in real life I'm trying to save a place called the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. And it's under threat of being strip-mined, so you can go to AustraliaZoo.com and sign the petition and help us with that. But it was a great movie to film and I hope everyone enjoys it. It'll be coming out on March 23rd." (2010) •On her favourite part of filming Free Willy: "Well, probably my favourite part of filming the movie, you know it's my first one and I've always been really used to doing documentary filming and things like that. And so coming into this movie, it was a lot of fun because I'd never done anything like it. I mean, I loved doing all the different shots and working with all the incredible actors. And it was amazing how many people go into the making of a movie, like the crew there, there was over a hundred people working on it. Yet with documentary filming, there's usually just three people: a camera guy, a sound guy and a director, and us with an animal. So it was a lot of fun." (2010) •On if she's contractually obligated to have some sort of an animal in everything that she does, because of the love of animals in her family: "You know, it's true. I feel lost without an animal with me ... a lot of times, like when filming the movie, it was so good, because there were so many animals around me." (2010) •On the being in the atmosphere of animals: "It's true. I know, all animals, they have that—that sense about them. You know, what we always say is when you get to touch and feel an animal, it truly touches you. And a lot of times, when people think about conservation, they'll think about, you know, little woodland creatures, but also it leads about us." (2010) •On whether she thinks that to an animal, humans are their pets: "You know, I wouldn't be surprised. A lot of times, I look at animals and you wish that they could talk. We had a 175-year-old Galapagos Land Tortoise, and some of the stories and the things that she would've seen would've be incredible." (2010) •"We do have a very special bond with animals. And that's really what we've got to remember. We keep getting further and further away from animals, and we really do need to get closer and closer because you know it's like every time we lose an animal species it's like losing a brick from the house. Pretty soon the house just falls down, so that's really what we're all about." •On kid empowerment: "I watched this movie one time—it was a very, very old movie·and there was this line in it that said 'children should be seen and not heard.' And I had to ask my mum what that meant and she was telling me how kids back then didn't get to have an opinion. And I really believe that we've the next voters and the next decision makers. We're the next generation making a difference on our planet." (2010) •"I feel so lucky to be able to teach everyone else about animals, and how gorgeous they are, and show it to everyone else." (2010) •On her 13th Birthday: "It's nice because at Australian zoo, all kids get in free and all kids dress up, so you'll see them in their poodle skirts and bobby socks. It'll just be a really fun so I'm excited." (2011) •On her 13th Birthday: "It was so exciting.", "It was great to see so many kids were in the audience and joining in the festivities.", "We had '50s dance workshops, the cast from the musical Grease and the best cake ever.", "I couldn't have asked to have a better day." (2011) •About his father: "We think of Daddy every day. We get out one of his documentaries to play while we're getting ready for school, and that is very comforting. He taught me that one man can make a difference, and I believe that one kid can, too. It's so important to empower kids, because we are the next decision makers." (2011) •About her life: "I would like to tackle bigger issues that are troubling our planet, like our greatest challenge, the ever-exploding population. And one message I want to reach people with is, never buy wildlife products. When the buying stops, the killing can, too!." (2011)
